Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, consists of 14 islands that are connected by about 50 bridges. It is situated on Lake Mälaren, which flows into the Baltic Sea. Stockholm is a really marvellous city which is indeed a lively and cosmopolitan place. It contains both modern Scandinavian architecture and a lot of green areas. This city is outstanding with its fresh air, and this quality owe to combination of waterways (approximately 30% of the city area) and green areas and parks – also about 30 per cent of Stockholm.

As many famous cities, Stockholm consist of different districts. The most interesting district is the inner city, and this is also divided into three parts. In the north ( we can name it as a northern inner city) can be found smaller districts : Norrmalm, Vasastan and Östermalm. The second zone would be the southern inner city with zones Södermalm and a small island Gamla Stan. The third separate district is the island of Kungsholmen.

If you like shopping, Norrmalm is the perfect districts for you because it is the major commercial district. Also, the central railway station and metro hub can be found there. Furthermore, this district is known as City and it is considered as the absolute center of Stockholm. You will found here the famous pedestrian shopping street Drottninggatan. Vasastan is ideal for administrative purposes. The main features of this zone is that it is a large, generally residential area. The central part is around the Odenplan square. Östermalm is both commercial and residential area. Many markets, nightclubs and elite bars can be found in the closest zone to the city center, around the Stureplan square. The wide boulevards of Narvavägen and Karlavägen, which lead to the Karlaplan square are bordered by decorated stone houses. Also, in that area are situated many museums of Stockholm.

In the southern inner city is situated the old town – Gamla Stan. This part is the historical centre, because there are the Royal Palace, the Swedish parliament, old buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. Södermalm was in the past a working-class district. The area has numerous restaurants and pubs, specialist shops and boutiques.

The western part of the inner city is made up of an island - Kungsholmen.

Of course, there are also suburbs of Stockholm. Some of the Northern and Western Suburbs are: Västerort, Ekerö, Solna and Sundbyberg, Danderyd, Lidingö. The Southern and Eastern suburbs consist of: Söderort, Vaxholm, Nacka and Värmdö, Huddinge, Haninge, Tyresö, Södertälje.

Javea is a small town in the north of Costa Blanca and it is surrounded by the Sant Antoni and La Neo capes. The excellent location is recognized by many tourists as the town is shielded from the cold wind thanks to the Montgo mountain barrier. There can be found varied landscape along the cost and inland, and because of the mild climate many leisure activities are offered to visitors.

The town is divided into three main areas: the old quarter, the harbour and Arenal beach.
The old part of the town was once a strongly fortified city built to counter the constant threats from the land and the sea during many centuries. This introduced a special way of living and influenced the structure of private and public buildings.
The second area, Aduanas del Mar is a quarter of former sailors. It has progressively grown thanks to the raisin trade of fishing. In this part of the town, interesting sights to visit is the Plaza Almirante Bastarreche. From there one can walk to the fish market and watch the famous fish auctions. Also, there is the yacht club that is a perfect starting point for a lot of different sports.
Finally, the third part of the town is at the heart of Javea bay. There can be found a pleasant, shell shaped beach with fine sand and shallow water. The intensely busy summer season is additionally encouraged by the high concentration of bars, restaurants and pubs.

As in any other Spanish town, Javea also has largely celebrated fiestas. The patron saint fiestas are celebrated in honour of Jesus Nazareno on May 3 with processions and religious acts. On June 24 the town fills with fire and colour ready to welcome the summer. In second half of July the streets fill with music of marches of the Moors and Christians. Between 1 and 8 of September the people of Javia honour Nuestra Senora del Loreto. Furthermore, during the rest of the year there are many celebrations, street parties, as well as cultural and sports events.

The area that lies between the provinces of Valencia and Murcia in Spain is known as Costa Blanca. It has the reputation of a friendly and welcoming place. In this warm region visitors can find everything that they are looking for: wide, long beaches, coves, mountains, nature reserves, sumptuous cuisine, museums, history, traditions, festivals, peace and tranquility, and sports facilities. The possibilities are endless, from Guardamar to Denia, via well-known cities and towns such as Alicante, Benidorm, La Vila Joiosa, Calp or Xabia. There is a huge variety of cultural pursuits, among many others are the archeology museum in Alicante, the MARQ; the local history museum of Denia, Xabia, and Xalo; the wax museum in Benidorm; the toy museum in Denia; the grape and raisin museum in Alcanali..

Furthermore, the Costa Blanca has a series of nature reserves such as the Montgo, the salt flats of Santa Pola, the Pego marshes, the Mariola mountain range, the Font Roja nature reserve, the Fondo in Elx and the salt lagoons of La Mata-Torrevieja. In total, eight of the fifteen protected zones in the Comunidad Valenciana are in the southern regions, and this is a proof that man and nature can live in harmony.

During the various different festivals, which are celebrated all year round (particularly in the summer), one can see for oneself the open, friendly character of its people. This character is mainly due to the history of this land, as it has long witnessed the passage of many cultures and welcomed them as settlers. The remains of Neanderthal man in caves near the coast is still can be found: Les Cendres cave in Moraira and the Ampla cave on the Montgo in Xabia. Also, traces of Iberian settlements can be found there. However, the Muslims and the Christians have left the most significant impact on this area. The religious architecture, including blue and purple dome characteristic of the churches in this region, are the impact of the Muslim era. Finally, the landscape was defined by the arrival of the Christians.

Moreover, the Costa Blanca is famous for its wide variety of leisure activities. For example, in Benidorm we can find Terra Mitica, a theme park that represents 4 Mediterranean cultures ( th Iberians, Egyptians, Greeks and romans). There are other educational places such as Mundomar what is a park that is inspired by the sea. Also in Benidorm, visitor can spand a day in Aqualandia, that is a park full of swimming pools and chutes of various shapes and sizes.

To sum up, the region of Costa Blanca is a land built by different cultures that have formed welcoming local people, beautiful landscapes, protected nature parks and clean beaches. Finally, the climate in this area is pleasant and mild throughout the year.

Have you ever slept at a temperature of -5°C in your room? If not, it is the time to try it. The famous IceHotel in Sweden is a real prof how a building can be a real artwork. Moreover, an artwork made of ice! Indeed, this hotel is one of the most remarkable hotels in the world. It is located in a small village in northern Sweden.
Ice Hotel has to be redesigned and rebuilt every winter again. It is because the ice melt back into the river on springs. Thus, each winter we can enjoy in new sculptures and features. Each construction usually starts in November. The main construction element is called “ snice” which is a mixture of air and water. They are frozen together in metal molds and make a material similar to concrete. This material is denser than common snow so the melting is slower. When it is sufficiently frozen, the molds are removed. The rooms are formed by adding walls made of blocks of ice. There are 47 rooms, and approximately 100 people works at the construction of the whole hotel.
The beds are also interesting. They are usually constructed from a huge block of ice and at the top of it there is a wooden frame with a mattress. Then, it is covered with reindeer skins. The hotel guests sleep in polar thermal sleeping bags, tested to around -40°C so the sleeping is a very pleasant experience.

And, unfortunately, there will still be many places that you will not be able to visit, and just because it is a huge city with many sights and you will not have enough time for everything.

As it is known, Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, and it is the second largest city in Spain, after Madrid. Barcelona is a city which still grows, because there are many great things about Barcelona. For example, it is one of the world’s leading tourist, economic, and cultural-sports centers. Moreover its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the major global cities at the world. Really, it is a major cultural and economic center in south-western Europe (Iberian Peninsula), 26th in the world (after Moscow, before Dubai) and a growing financial center. Barcelona is the 4th best business city and fastest improving city in Europe. This city gives place to one of Europe’s principal Mediterranean ports as well as to Barcelona international airport. It is a amazing fact that this airport handles above 34 million passengers per year.

As a favourite travel destination for many of as, Barcelona offers a rich cultural and historic heritage. The roots of the city goes back to 3rd or 4th century BC. In about 15 BC, this location was used by the Romans as a military camp. In the early 5th century the city was conquered by the Visigoths, becoming for a few years the capital of all Hispania. In the early 8th century it is conquered by the Arabs, and it was reconquered in 801 by Charlemagne’s son Louise, who made Barcelona the seat of the Carolingian Spanish March.

What are the main sights? The Gothic Quarter is the center of the old city of Barcelona. There can be found many buildings that date from medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Between 1885 and 1950, the Catalan modernista architecture developed and left an important legacy in Barcelona. Several of these buildings are World Heritage Sites. For instance, Antoni Gaudi was a famous architect whose work can be seen throughout the city. One of his worldwide-known works is the still unfinished church of the Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction since 1882.

Another beautiful sight designed by Gaudi is Parc Geull, which is actually a garden complex with architectural elements situated on the hill of El Carmel. It was built between 1900 to 1914 and it is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is also Casa Mila, also designed by Antony Gaudi and built during the years 1905–1910 (officially completed in 1912). It was a controversial design at the time for the bold forms of the undulating stone facade and wrought iron decoration of the balconies and windows. This building is famous for its steel structure and curtain walls- the facade is self-supporting.

The next great work by Antoni Gaudi is Casa Batllo. Actualy, Gaudi and Jujol ( Josep Maria) restored and remodeled this building in 1904-1906 (originally built in 1877). The building looks very remarkable — like everything Gaudí designed, this building looks very remarkable. The ground floor is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. It is obvious that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the facade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles. The roof is also very interesting.

There are many reasons why one should visit London, but one of the iconic symbols of that city is certainly the Tower Bridge. It is close to the Tower of London, and for that reason the bridge has got its name. Tower Bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways. They are designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are found in the base of each tower. Originally, the bridge was painted a greenish-blue color, however in 1997 was is painted red, white and blue.

A little bit of history

In the second half of the 19th century, there was a need for a one more river crossing downstream of London bridge because of the increased commercial development in London. To find a solution to the river crossing problem, a committee was formed in 1876. More than 50 designs were submitted, and in 1884, a design by sir Horace Jones was chosen. Sir John Wolfe Barry was the engineer and he devised the idea of a bascule bridge with two towers built on piers. The central span was split into two same leaves, which could be raised to allow river traffic to pass.

The construction started in 1886 and took eight years. 432 construction workers were employed and E W Crutwell was the resident engineer for the construction. Two massive piers, containing over 70,000 tons of concrete, were sunk into the riverbed to support the construction. Over 11,000 tons of steel provided the framework for the towers and walkways. This was then clad in cornish granite and portland stone, both to protect the underlying steelwork and to give the bridge a pleasing appearance. After the death of Jones (in 1887), George D. Stevenson took over the project. He decided to replace the original brick facade with Victorian Gothic style. The bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales and his wife.

Design

The length of the bridge is 800 feet (244 m) and the two towers are each 213 feet (65 m) high. The central span of 200 feet (61 m) between the towers is split into two equal leaves, and they can be raised to an angle of 83 degrees to allow river traffic to pass. Although the bascules weigh over 1,000 tons each, they are counterbalanced to minimise the force required and allow raising in five minutes.
